Edwards and Magee took Schabacker’s work and built it into a structure for analysing markets that still stands today as the pre-eminent book. Some will dismiss this classic book as expensive. It is, but it is also priceless. I am constantly flipping to a chapter and reviewing something and having another “aha!” moment. The information in this classic text is timeless.

4. Reading Price Charts Bar By Bar: The Technical Analysis of Price Action for the Serious Trader 1st Edition Al Brooks.

“The GREAT TRADERS control their emotions and constantly follow their rules.” Al Brooks.

By far one of the hardest to read and understand trading books the first time you read it. For those traders who have spent their time on the charts (the 10 000 hour rule applies!) as you re-read the text the concepts start to become clearer. The price action repeats certain behaviors and market cycles and the trader always has to be following their plan. Brooks attention to detail is excellent and he expands on this book in three other texts. Trading Price Action Trends, Trading Price Action Ranges, and Trading Price Action Reversals. As I said before, probably the most difficult to read especially for someone who perhaps isn’t used to technical writing, but careful study of your charts, on any time frame, you will start to recognise the market cycles Brooks talks about. You have to work a bit to recognize the setups, but you’re not likely to feel short-changed information-wise. Again, another set of books I am constantly going back to and studying. I believe Brook’s to be very credible in his trading knowledge and results.

3. Building Wealth in the Stock Market: A Proven Investment Plan for Finding the Best Stocks and Managing Risk 1st Edition Colin Nicholson.

I had the pleasure to meet Colin many years ago and I hold him in high regard. He is an excellent teacher, and his methods are the simplest and most concise probably of all the trading books I have ever read. This book only applies to shares, no leveraged markets, and strictly for buying and selling shares, no shorting. He outlines his entire trading plan and you gain access to more articles and his entire history of his trading through his website. For an initial yearly fee you get three books as well as a year’s membership to his teaching. I have no financial ties to Colin nor do I gain any benefit from sharing this information with you. As I said above, if your interests are purely in building wealth through the share (stock) markets, Colin’s book in my mind is the greatest value for money. He clearly explains his disciplined and and detailed trading plan, his understanding and mental approach to the market and leaves nothing out in the process to fully equip you with everything you need. “The best loser is the long-term winner.” Brent Penfold.

Another individual whose work I have read and find myself returning back to over and over again. I read Brent’s first book Trading The SPI, and I really resonated towards his mechanical system approach. Though trading can be performed in different markets, across different timeframes, and with different instruments based upon different techniques, there is one common thread that ties all winning traders together: the universal principles of successful trading. The one key concept that I learned from Brent, but it has taken me many years to finally grasp and practice is that “ the best loser is the long term winner .” When you finally realise that the Holy Grail of trading doesn’t exist, and that understanding that trading is just about probabilities and money management you have a chance! Risk of ruin is a key concept Brent focuses on in this book and if you are a serious trader you need to know and understand this. If you read this book and just apply the risk of ruin formula to your trading, the book will pay for itself many times over. This makes this book one of the Top Ten Trading books of all time!

1. Reminiscences of a Stock Operator Paperback – Edwin Lefèvre.

The longer you trade, the more relevant this book becomes. Generations of readers have found that it has more to teach them about markets and people than years of experience. This is a timeless tale that will enrich your life-and your portfolio. A fictionalized account of Jesse Livermore’s path from small-time bucketeer to big-time stock trader, is one of the most widely-read and revered books on trading. The techniques he made public have endured through many decades; his trading rules earned him millions of dollars, provided he stayed faithful to them. Livermore also lost his entire fortune on more than one occasion, when he ignored his trading rules. Jesse Livermore was a self-made man trading with his own money – not other people’s money, like modern investment banks and hedge funds. Depending how you measure it, his fortune peaked between 1.1 and 14.0 billion dollars in today’s money.

5 Forex Trading Books You Need to Read.

Finding good Forex trading books to read can be more challenging than one might think.

Sure, there are plenty of options, but finding one that resonates with your style of trading can be difficult.

What’s worse is that most of them try to convey a particular strategy that may have worked for the writer many years ago in a specific market but probably won’t work for you today in your market of choice.

For this reason, I find books that cover trading from a higher vantage point much more useful and widely applicable.

What do I mean by “higher vantage point”?

I’m referring to discussions about the psychology of trading, or in the case of the Market Wizards series, lessons learned from top traders.

Both of these topics are helpful regardless of the style of trading you employ, which is why I’ve compiled the list below. Each one of these books has a special place in my office and gets read at least twice a year.

Do note, however, that none of the five books below are Forex-specific. But from one trader to another, I can assure you that they will have a positive and lasting effect on your trading performance as they did on mine .

1. Market Wizards: Interviews with Top Traders.

This is by far my favorite book in the Market Wizards series written by Jack Schwager.

Why is it my favorite?

One reason – a trader by the name of Ed Seykota. He is, in my opinion, the epitome of a successful trader.

But before we get too far along on my favorite part of the book, let me give a brief synopsis.

This book in particular shares the stories of Bruce Kovner, Paul Tudor Jones, Marty Schwartz, and James Rogers, Jr. to name a few. It also covers several financial markets ranging from currencies to stocks and everything in between.

Like other Market Wizards books, Interviews with Top Traders also includes a psychology of trading section in the back. In it, you can read an interview with Dr. Van K. Tharp, which is enlightening, to say the least.

Remember that higher vantage point I mentioned earlier?

The interview with Ed Seykota is a perfect reflection of that perspective. Although he uses computerized trading systems – which is vastly different from trading with price action – his personal beliefs about what it takes to succeed as a trader are universally applicable and no doubt invaluable to any reader.

Here are a few of my favorite lines from Mr. Seykota:

Charting is a little like surfing. You don’t have to know a lot about the physics of tides, resonance, and fluid dynamics in order to catch a good wave. You just have to be able to sense when it’s happening and then have the drive to act at the right time.

To be clear, the “sense” that Ed is referring to comes with thousands of hours of screen time. I mentioned something similar to this idea of connecting with the market in the lesson on impulsive and corrective waves.

Be sensitive to the subtle differences between “intuition” and “into wishing.

The word hope is a “four-letter word” in the world of trading and is synonymous with the word wish . If you find yourself using either of these words while trading, take a break and reflect on what you might be doing wrong.

Here at DPA we took it one step further and explicitly banned the use of either word inside of the member’s area, and for good reason. It can single-handedly trigger emotions that conflict with a logical thought process .

Win or lose, everybody gets what they want out of the market.

Take a few minutes to digest this one. It’s simple, yet quite profound once you realize that he isn’t excluding the notion of self-sabotage.

But don’t think that the interview with Ed is the only valuable section of this book. There are many others that I simply can’t include here without running on for 20,000 words (which would probably put you to sleep).

So, do yourself a favor and pick up the book for yourself. It’ll undoubtedly change your perception of what it takes to succeed in this game called trading.

2. The Disciplined Trader: Developing Winning Attitudes.

Instead of telling you what The Disciplined Trader by Mark Douglas is all about, I’ll let the foreword speak for itself:

I sincerely feel that success in trading is 80 percent psychological and 20 percent one’s methodology, be it fundamental or technical.

I couldn’t agree more.

And if that didn’t give it away, this Forex trading book tackles the diverse and often overlooked topic of psychological management.

The mental game is without question the most important aspect for any trader. لسوء الحظ، بالنسبة لمعظم هو & # 8217؛ s أيضا مهملة بانتظام.

In my opinion, it’s because it isn’t “sexy”. Putting on trades and booking profits is sexy, managing your psychology is not.

But this book doesn’t just tell you how you should think while trading. That would be both illogical and ill-advised to listen to such advice.

Instead, the author, Mark Douglas, breaks psychological management into three parts, making it easy to reverse engineer your way to a winning attitude.

Those three parts include:

Introduction The Nature of the Trading Environment From a Psychology Perspective Building a Framework for Understanding Ourselves.

What I especially love about this book is how relevant and relatable it is from every angle. You won’t read a single chapter without connecting it to something you did or didn’t do in the past. Perhaps it was a mistake, or merely a gap in your understand of the markets. Either way, it’s all very relatable.

This is where part 3 of the book comes into play. It discusses everything from the dynamics of goal setting to managing mental energy, all the while providing the reader with actionable information.

For this reason, chapters 3 and 7 stand apart as my two favorites in The Disciplined Trader .

Chapter 3 is titled “The Market is Always Right”, which covers a very similar concept to that of the post I wrote titled How the Forex Market is Smarter Than You.

The title alone is enough for this chapter to be one of my favorites. I get hundreds of emails every week from Forex traders around the world. Many of these emails involve a question about why a particular market did what it did.

Well, I’m here to tell you that as a technical trader, the reason behind a movement in price doesn’t matter. And if you’re on a quest to determine the reasons why a market reacted the way it did in an effort to decipher what it will do next, you should probably focus your attention elsewhere.

For those who have seen a currency plummet on relatively positive figures or rally on what seems like bad news, you know this to be true.

You cannot and should not try to reason with the market. It’s a dead end.

So, if you’re ready to get a handle on your mental game by dissecting the reasons behind the mistakes you make and also correct them, I can’t recommend The Disciplined Trader enough.

3. Hedge Fund Market Wizards: How Winning Traders Win.

Another one of my favorites by Jack Schwager is Hedge Fund Market Wizards .

Now I know what you may be thinking – I don’t run a hedge fund, so how can this help me?

But remember, these books aren’t about learning specific trading strategies or techniques. They’re about learning best practices from those who have found massive success in the financial markets .

And the traders in this book have certainly done that!

Think of every Market Wizards book as a workout for your former perceptions about the financial markets. They will challenge your beliefs about what it takes to be a successful trader, but I guarantee you’ll be better for it.

Just like the first book in the series, Hedge Fund Market Wizards offers in-depth interviews with some of the world’s best traders. These include iconic figures such as Ray Dalio to lesser-known (but no less impressive) traders such as Jamie Mai.

A nice touch with this book, in particular, is the conclusion, which provides 40 Market Wizard lessons. It’s the perfect summary for another incredible piece of work by Jack Schwager.

Of all the legendary traders featured in this book, my favorite is the interview with Michael Platt.

One of my favorite quotes from his interview is:

I believe this notion is true regardless of the market you’re trading. It’s for this very reason that doing nothing is preferable in most cases.

He later goes on to say that the two biggest mistakes traders make are not doing enough homework and being too casual about risk .

4. Trading in the Zone.

The psychology behind trading is arguably the most misunderstood and underutilized aspects of what it takes to become successful.

The book, Trading in the Zone by Mark Douglas tackles the subject head on and does a beautiful job of connecting the dots.

A key objective for any writer is being able to make the material both easy to understand and also applicable to everyday life.

Mark Douglas has accomplished both with Trading in the Zone .

What sets this Forex trading book apart is how he describes the positive and negative forces at work that make us do what we do as traders. It’s the perfect compliment to The Disciplined Trader , which we discussed earlier.

If you don’t want to read the entire book (I highly recommend that you do), chapters two, three and four are must-reads in my opinion.

Chapter two sets the stage for why trading has such a lure for most individuals. Mr. Douglas also presents the dangers but does so by pointing out the flaws in the human mind that exacerbate these threats.

Pay close attention to the section titled, “Failure to Take Responsibility”. The ideas discussed here will certainly resonate with many of your experiences as was the case for me when I read this book for the first time many years ago.

Chapter three continues with the importance (and failure for many) of taking responsibility for their trading.

It’s my favorite because most traders, in my experience, fail to understand fully and accept the risks they take . This single failing is the epitome of why 90% of traders fail to achieve consistent profits.

If you are serious about trading Forex, you need to be serious about taking control of your emotions, and Trading in the Zone is a great place to start.

5. The New Market Wizards: Conversations with America's Top Traders.

Do you see a theme yet?

I’m a big fan of the Market Wizards series of books and for good reason. There’s no better way to learn how to become successful than by studying those who have already done it.

That’s what these books offer – an unprecedented look inside the minds of some of the greatest traders who have ever lived.

Okay, back to Conversations with America’s Top Traders…

This book is the sequel to Market Wizards: Interviews with Top Traders , which was the first book we covered in this post.

Everything! It follows the same Q&A style as the other books in the series but includes interviews with more than twenty new traders.

Choosing a favorite was a no-brainer for me. Without question, my personal favorite interview is the one with Bill Lipschutz.

For those of you who don’t know him, Mr. Lipschutz is one of the greatest Forex traders who’s ever lived. He started out at Salomon Brothers in the early 1980s before co-founding his own fund in 1995.

Aside from being the only currency trader in this book, what intrigues me most about Bill is his story. I won’t spoil it for those who haven’t read it yet, but to say he experienced the highs and lows of trading early in his career would be a massive understatement.

Here is one of my favorite quotes from Bill Lipschutz:

I don’t think you can consistently be a winning trader if you’re banking on being right more than 50 percent of the time. You have to figure out how to make money being right only 20 or 30 percent of the time.

Do yourself a favor and pick up a copy of this book, it will undoubtedly take your trading, and perhaps your life, to the next level.

So feel free to use this as a quick reference guide, but I believe it’s important to own the whole series to learn what it takes to succeed as a trader.

Best Forex trading books every trader should read.

As a professional forex trader, keeping up to date and learning about new strategies and ways to improve your trading is critical to your long-term success. This self-motivation to improve and lifelong learning is actually very common amongst forex traders . We are often self-taught because of our fascination with the currency markets!

During the years, there were a couple of books that had a profound impact on how I approach my forex trading. These books were eye-openers in one way or another and were books that made me the forex trader I am today. This list of best forex books are my top recommendations for you to read and improve your forex knowledge.

The best Forex books list:

1 - Japanese Candlestick Charting Techniques – Steve Nison.

Steve Nison is arguably the “grandfather” of candlesticks in the Western world, he is the one deemed responsible for bringing Japanese candlestick charts (which some say go back to the late 1800s in Japan) to the Western trading world.

In his book, he gives some background on the Japanese candlestick charts and how he found out about them from a Japanese broker. Then, he quickly goes into describing all the different candlestick patterns, with well illustrated examples. The second part of the book goes into using candlesticks with other techniques such as eliott wave, trendlines, moving averages and more.

This is THE definitive book on candlestick charting and candle patterns. If you want to know more about price action, this book should be the first one to pick up. انا اوصي بشده به. اقرأ أكثر.

2 - Reminiscences of a Stock Operator – Edwin Lefèvre.

Something different now! This book, originally written in the 1920s, is a trader’s favourite, a true classic and definitely belongs in this best forex books list! It describes the life of Larry Livingston, a pseudonym for Jesse Livermore, one of the most brilliant traders in history. From his early days trying to make some money in the bucket shops to subsequently earning (and losing) his fortunes on Wall Street multiple times, this timeless tale is probably the book about trading I’ve most enjoyed reading.

What makes this book so valuable (other than that it’s just an absolute joy to read) is that it’s full of trader’s wisdoms, timeless advice that every forex trader should have in its mind every time they’re trading. Some examples: “Cut your losses quickly”, “the trend is your friend”, “Don’t trade when there aren’t clear opportunities” و اكثر. 3. Technical Analysis of the Financial Markets – John J. Murpy.

This book is one of the best reference works on technical analysis ever, hands down. It’s the sort of book you pick up if you want to know more about something specific, like how to recognise the most important reversal patterns or figure out how a specific indicator works. Anytime you need something related to technical analysis, it’s very likely that it will be described in this technical analysis book.

This is pretty much the bible on technical analysis and the 500+ pages in this book are pretty much the only thing you need to build a solid foundation in technical analysis. It is clearly written and covers topics such as trends, trend continuation, support and resistance, reversal patterns, moving averages, candlesticks, most major indicators, pivot points and more. 4 - Trading in the Zone – Mark Douglas.

This book is all about trader’s mindset. If you have a solid trading system but still find yourself losing out more than you win, this book might be for you. Trading in the Zone is a book about trading psychology , your self-worth and trading ethic, discipline, getting to know yourself and acknowledging that you might be the weak point in your trading system. After all, one of the hardest things to get right is your trading emotions, and this book lays out a mental framework to conquer these aspects of the trading business.

If you find yourself struggling in the forex market by entering trades too quickly, panicking when things don’t go your way, having emotions of fear or even excitement influence your trading, give this one a go. It might sound like soft psychoanalytical ramblings, but Mark Douglas knows what he is talking about and this book will help you become a better trader. اقرأ أكثر.

5. Trade Your Way To Financial Freedom – Van K. Tharp.

Van K. Tharp is an authority on coaching people to become the best traders they can be. As an academic, he’s done years of research and has coined extremely important trading concepts like R-multiples and position sizing.

I especially like the practical nature of this book. The book will guide you step by step in developing your own trading system and doesn’t leave a stone unturned. It talks about important concepts such as profit taking, what to do if the market turns against you, etc. For traders struggling to find a system they are profitable with, this is the definite book you should read!

6. Trading Price Action Trends – Al Brooks.

Whereas the previous one was all about trading psychology, this book is considered by many the best book on price action, hands down . This is only the first of a three-book series, the other two dealing with ranges and reversals.

It’s not an easy book to go through though. Al Brooks covers loads of content, explaining the meaning of every single candle on the chart and the meaning of multiple candles as price action patterns. He then goes on to trends, using trend lines, channels and trend patterns to explain to the reader how to successfully trade the trend.

Digging through the book, it’s very clear that Al knows what he is talking about. If you want to get a feel of what it’s about, have a look at his Youtube channel, where he posts regular videos on his trading techniques. اقرأ أكثر.

7. Market Wizards: Interviews with Top Traders – Jack D. Schwager.

This is another must-read book that belongs on my best forex books list. It’s actually not just one story, but a collection of interviews with the best traders of the business – or at least the top of around 1980s. It is chock full of timeless wisdoms that still apply today, even though the actual interviews might sound a bit dated with the advent of modern trading techniques. Nevertheless, the advice by the traders still stands, as it deals with things like trading patience, discipline, following the big trends, risk and capital management and making consistent trades.

It is a book that will make the most sense as you’ve built up some trading experience and on the one hand have no difficulties in following the conversation of the interviews, but on the other hand can relate to some of the stories of loss and what made the difference to turn around some of the traders’ routine. 8. Thinking, Fast and Slow – Daniel Kahneman.

This fascinating book has absolutely nothing to do with trading, but it’s still relevant to this best forex books list in quite some unexpected ways. Daniel Kahneman takes us on a tour of how we think, describing our thinking as divided in 2 systems, a fast and a slow thinking system.

This book is sublime in explaining human behaviour and cognitive processes and biases, and in that way is very useful to keep in mind with relation to trading emotions and behaviour. It describes why we do what we do, why we make emotional decisions that might not always be in our best interest and what we can do to make better choices. This is a book that not only will improve your trading, but will be useful in daily life as well. A highly fascinating read! اقرأ أكثر.

9. Pit Bull: Lessons from Wall Street’s Champion Day Trader – Marty Schwartz.

I only recently picked up this book on a recommendation from a friend, who said it was one of his favourite books. I can only agree. It’s just such a joy to read the stories of Marty “buzzy” Schwartz as he starts trading professionally, at a relatively later stage in life (he was around 35 I believe). The stories of his first steps in the pit of the Amex and the consecutive launch as one of Wall Street’s most successful traders ever is incredible to read and really motivates you to get your own trading in order and go for it. If you watch the documentary Floored before reading this book, you’ll definitely have an idea of how pit trading is completely different than what we’re used to these days, trading from our computers. A great story from an even greater trader, very much recommended!
